Extended cable joints for UK

In our previous newsletter, we informed you that in the UK, Western Power Distribution had taken over the Midlands utility – Central Networks. As well as the requirement for transition, straight through and branch joints as used in WPD South West and Wales, WPD Midlands had a requirement to connect three core cables incorporating collective Cu-wire or Cu-tape screen which are more commonly encountered in the former Central Networks region.’

Cables with Cu-tape screen are thicker and require more space to create effective earthing. The existing resin space in the Lovisil® K105 was not suitable for this purpose. The solution involved extending the cable input by 160 mm. Once the design was ready, the opportunities for production were examined. Considering the numbers, it did not make sense to create a new mould. The idea of integrating extensions quickly came to the fore. They are also made from ABS and can be effectively glued to existing cable joints. Naturally, the design underwent far-reaching strength testing. In the second half of 2013, the first 1000 extended cable joints were delivered - straight through joints as well as branch joints.

At this moment in time, it is being examined how these joints can be applied for other purposes. For example, in industrial settings where one encounters heavy-duty cables; lead armouring or extra screen wires. If you would like to use this solution for your specific purpose, then please feel free to contact us. We will be pleased to help you generate ideas.
